Global Energy Leader Chooses Blue Sky Network
La Jolla, Calif. — July 26, 2011 — Blue Sky Network, a leading, global provider of satellite tracking solutions, announced today that one of North America’s largest oil and gas companies has selected Blue Sky to provide custom tracking and reporting solutions for a year-long research project in and around the Arctic Ocean.
Using Blue Sky Network’s hardware and software and the Iridium satellite network—in addition to its own satellite imagery—the upstream division of the energy company will be creating more accurate models for ice floe movement and melt-rates. The data derived from the project will yield broad applications, such as aiding in global warming studies and helping better understand the environmental impact of new exploration.
The oil and gas company plans to deploy the solution in August, placing Blue Sky Network hardware on “floes of interest” and monitoring the changing paths and shapes of the floes for at least 12 months, with the devices sending reports twice a day. The lead researcher on the project does “not expect the floes to survive another season,” hence the specificity of the floes chosen for the duration of the project.
The satellite monitoring solution will include Blue Sky Network’s portable D410 tracking devices, which have been customized to conserve battery life, and to withstand the harshest weather the Arctic may deliver.
“We couldn’t be happier with this client and project,” says Blue Sky CEO, Jon Gilbert. “For years, our D410s have been used by aviation and energy professionals to deliver tracking data on aircrafts and other assets. Now, with this project, it shows that satellite tracking data, properly applied, can actually help us better understand our environmental impact. We’re proud to be key players in this research.
